Research on the Impact of the Construction of a National Unified Market on the Export Resilience of Chinese Cities

  • Objective/Meaning In the context of rising uncertainty in international trade, enhancing urban export resilience is of great significance for strengthening the resilience of China's open economy and promoting high-quality economic development.
Methods/Procedures By using panel data for 260 prefecture-level and above cities in China from 2014 to 2023, the paper measures the construciton of a national unified market by the Relative Price Approach and estimates urban export resilience using the Hodrick–Prescott (HP) filter. A Two-way Fixed Effects Model is employed to examine the impact of the construciton of a national unified market on urban export resilience.
Results/Conclusions The construction of the national unified market significantly improves urban export resilience and the positive effect is more pronounced in central and western cities, resource-based cities, and cities with stronger government support. The construction of national unified market enhances urban export resilience by promoting economic agglomeration, improving urban innovation capability, and strengthening industrial chain resilience. The solutions provided include advancing innovation-driven development, enhancing industrial chain resilience, and promoting high-level opening-up.
