Objective/Meaning As the first “national famous historical and cultural town” in Fuzhou and one of the first Fujian-Taiwan rural construction and innovation pilot projects in Fujian Province, Songkou Town holds typical significance. Through the overall grasp of its historical background, the design concept and community performance in its local construction strategy are evaluated, and the existing limitations are analyzed, in order to provide reference for solving the problems of intensified contradiction between community and industry, local ecological destruction and labor loss in the process of rural revitalization in China.
Methods/Procedures By comprehensively using the research methods such as non-participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and text analysis, the qualitative analysis was conducted based on the limited samples, and the evolution characteristics of local construction in Songkou Town in three stages were sorted out, namely, before 2014, from 2014 to 2023 and from 2023 to now. Then, the practical strategies of rural construction in Fujian and Taiwan were analyzed from the material level (physical space construction), spiritual level (local image construction) and mixed level (cultural atmosphere shaping). Last, the suggestions for improvement were put forward.
Results/Conclusions The local construction in Songkou Town belonged to the top-down model led by the government and designed by the designer team. Its practice has achieved observable results in space remodeling, cultural activation and local identity remodeling. However, there were still four limitations in the implementation process of the town: population loss, the absence of elderly care, the lag of pollution control and the conflict of ideas. Therefore, the optimization paths were put forward, such as constructing the mechanism of talent return, cultivating the silver hair economy, controlling sewage according to classification policies, and promoting the in-situ integration.
