Abstract:
【Objective/Meaning】The mode and effect of international development assistance on the economic growth of the South Pacific region were explored in this paper,and the countermeasures for improving the effectiveness of assistance in the South Pacific region were put forward,thus to promote the economic development in the South Pacific region.【Methods/Procedures】Based on a summary of the economic development status of the five island countries in the South Pacific(Fiji,Papua New Guinea,Samoa,Tonga and Vanuatu) and the basic situation of receiving the international development assistance(including the official development assistance and the technical cooperation assistance),the basic model of Papanaik's international development assistance and the economic growth was used to establish a panel data regression analysis model with five South Pacific island countries as the samples..And then,the impact of official development assistance(ODA),technical cooperation assistance and trade on the economic growth of the five island countries was empirically analyzed.【Results/Conclusions】The official development assistance hindered the economic development of the five island countries while the technical cooperation assistance and trade could promote the economic growth of the five island countries.Therefore,the countersures were put forward including taking full account of the national conditions of the recipient countries,attaching importance to the role of technical cooperation assistance,and strengthening the assistance for trade in combination with the characteristics of the South Pacific region.
